SUMMARY

-------

A 3d action game. You zoom down a hyperspace tunnel, in 1st or 3rd person

perspective, fighting the invasion.

REQUIREMENTS

------------

o The Crystal Space 3d Engine - freely downloadable. The latest version.

  try http://crystal.sf.net

o Almost any computer. Old pcs can run 640x480 from the console software 3d,

  and a 250Mhz machine runs a 640x480x16 window of software 3d from X at

about 10 fps. With 3d hardware it'll be accelerated, using 3dfx, nVidia or

other opengl drivers and true colour at resolutions like 1024x768.

  A 650Mhz pc with a Tnt2 card gives 70+ frames per second.

o Almost any operating system, Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris, OS/2, BeOs, etc.

HEALTH WARNING

--------------

Video games show images at a possibly low framerate of varying intensity,

this has been known to increase the chance of seizure for epileptics.

If you are sensitive to this, do not play these video games.

Also people can experience motion-sickness whilst playing immersive 3d games.

This game will not be an exception (although a 3rd person view can be used).

HOW TO PLAY

-----------

Select help from the game menu to review this information.

Use arrow keys to move, space to fire. Or use the mouse, point to

the position to move to and click the left mouse button to fire.

Like most games, shoot everything that moves and dodge enemy bullets.

You can speed up with the A key and slow down with the Z key.

Keep the keys pressed down to change speed.

With the C key the camera viewpoint can be changed. The game

starts in 3d person perspective - centered on the tunnel. Press C once

to change to 3d person perspective, centered on the hyperspace craft.

Press C again to change to a 1st person perspective. Keep

pressing C to toggle through all possible camera viewpoints.

The Escape key exits to the menu. Here you can press escape again

to resume playing. A secret keypress only for README reading people

is ALT-S which will make a screenshot. ALT-F will show the framerate.

If you die or quit, you may be presented with the highscore screen,

with a cursor blinking at a highscore position. Type your name,

a maximum of 20 characters, and press return when done. Pressing

the escape key cancels the highscore entry.

To clear the highscores, select the highscores list from the main

menu, and press C while viewing the highscores. The highscores

will then be erased.

INSTALLING

----------

Unix Install Instructions

-------------------------

- Put this archive in a directory, a nice new one named 'tunnel' will do.

(note: do not extract .zip files in the data directory, they are read

  by the game)

- Obtain and compile the Crystal Space library (http://crystal.sf.net).

Or download the binaries for the library.

- Set the environment variable CRYSTAL to point to your Crystal Space.

Using bash you would type for example: export CRYSTAL=/home/myname/crystal

- Copy the cs-config configuration script into the tunnel dir.

Using bash, cd to the tunnel dir and type: cp $CRYSTAL/cs-config .

- Optionally: Edit the Makefile. You can set it up for your system here.

As distributed it will probably work fine. If your system does not have

strdup (i.e. gives linking errors complaining about the lack of a strdup

function) define MISSING_STRDUP in the Makefile.

- Optionally: Do a 'make depend'.

- perform 'make'.

- And 'tunnel' runs the game!

Use 'tunnel -video=opengl' to run the game hardware accelerated.

Visual C++ 6 Install Instructions

---------------------------------

This is more complex to do then a normal setup

Obtain an up to date version of Crystal Space

- Obtain and compile the Crystal Space library (http://crystal.sf.net).

Or download the binaries for the library. (see the HOWTO in the Crystal

Space documentation for details of how to do this).

- Copy tunnel.cfg into the Crystal Space directory

- Copy the src directory to the Crystal Space directory

- Copy the contents of the data directory to the Crystal Space data directory

- Copy Tunnel Fighter.dsp to mk\visualc

- Now load up the workspace cspace.dsw

- Insert the included project into the workspace

- Compile

- You should now be able to run Tunnel Fighter by running tunnel.exe

CONFIG

------

In tunnel.cfg are the configuration options. Select a video driver and

video settings here. If you use the software driver set the GAMMA in

soft3d.cfg, and you can set the AMBIENT_WHITE value in tunnel.cfg according

to your gamma, 40 is for gamma 1.0. AMBIENT_WHITE works with any 3d driver.

8 bit depth is faster than 16 bit, which is faster than 32 bit depth.

A lower resolution is also faster. The commandline switches -ilace and

-notxtmap speed up as well, but reduce quality somewhat.

Running in fullscreen, using the -fs commandline switch, also increases

the framerate, both for software and opengl modes.

You can also configure the sound driver in tunnel.cfg. To see what the

library is doing, you can uncomment the lines defining the Console.
