======== Route960 v.2b Users' Manual ========

-- What is it? --------

Route960 is a car action game.

-- Freeware --------

Route960 is provided as a freeware.
You can play it free of charge for your personal entertainment.

-- How to Start / End the Game --------

Double-click on Route960's icon to start the game.
Press [ESC] key to quit the game.
(You may also use [Alt]+[F4] for quitting.)

-- Controls in the Game --------

If you have a joystick or a joypad connected,
BUTTON 1 is the "brake" or "select" button, and
BUTTON 2 is the "accelerate" or "start" button.

If you want to play Route960 with a keyboard, use
[Z] key for BUTTON 1, and use
    [X] key for BUTTON 2.

On the title screen, press any button to invoke the main menu.
The main menu lets you select a game mode from these:
"Run the Routes" is the game itself.
You drive your car in this mode.
In "View Replays" mode you can review (replay) your previous drive.

On route select screen, hold down BUTTON 1 to get back to the title.
While a replay is in progress, hold down BUTTONs 1 and 2 to get back
to the title screen.

You can swap joystick buttons 1 and 2, in case your joystick has button
1 on the right of button 2. Use "Route960Tool" to configure.
You cannot swap keyboard buttons.

Press [ESC] key to quit the game.

-- Game Rule --------

You are to drive through mountain routes numbered 960s and 970s.
Since the roads are completely straight and your car is equipped with
an automatic transmission, your controls are an accelerator and a
brake only.

On routes 960's, your goal is to run specified distances.
The faster you run, the better.
On routes 970's, there is no limit on the distance you run.
You can run forever, unless you make a fatal mistake.
The farther you run, the better.

You are disqualified if your car fails to run up a hill and drags back.
You are also disqualified if your car crashes.

-- Highscores -------

Highscores (or records) are saved separately for every route.
As the highscore files reside in your user settings folder, records
that appear in the game change depending on the user logged in.

There is also a online highscore system available.
You can upload and download driving records and compete with other
players online. Use "Route960Tool" to participate.

-- Platforms Supported --------

Windows PCs with Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP are supported.
DirectX7 or later is required, but I suppose recent Windows have
it already installed.

You need a sound device to play Route960. Route960 fails to startup
if your PC cannot play any sound (exclude BIOS beeps, of course).

Joysticks and joypads are supported, but not required.

Route960 is tested to run on the following PCs.
- Celeron 667MHz with Windows98SE and DirectX9 (GPU: Intel i810)
- PentiumIII 866MHz with Windows2000 and DirectX9 (GPU: RADEON9200)
- AthlonXP 2000+ with WindowsXP and DirectX9 (GPU: Volari V3XT)

-- Revision History --------

All versions are in Japanese unless noted.

Version 2b English (Jul. 23, 2005)
  - First English version

Version 2b (Jul. 2, 2005)
  - Joystick buttons can now be swapped.
(I found there are some joysticks that has button 1 on the right and
button 2 on the left. With these joysticks, button layout gets
inconsistent with pedal layout on actual cars... I suppose there's
no contemporary car with the brake pedal on the right.)

Version 2a (Jun. 22, 2005)
  - Online highscore aware.
  - Adjusted acceleration.

Version 2a RC2 (Mar. 10, 2005) [TEST VERSION]
  - Released for beta-testing online highscore system.

Version 1bP (Dec. 30, 2004) [+Plus+] [COMMERCIAL]
  - Commercial (though not distributed in market) version
  - Includes Routes 981, 982 and 983.

Version 1a (Nov. 21, 2004)
  - First public release
