===============
1. INTRODUCTION
===============

Breakdown is a adventure game in the style of the classic LucasArts and
Sierra games of the late eighties/early nineties. You control a lowly
ensign aboard a stranded space ship and are tasked with getting it
moving again.

This game was created as an entrant for the April 2009 Monthly
Adventure Game Studio competition, which had the theme "Space
Derelict".

==========================
2. INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING
==========================

To install Breakdown simply locate and copy the following files to a
folder anywhere on your computer...

BREAKDOWN.EXE
The game itself.

WINSETUP.EXE
The setup program. See Game Setup section for more information.

ACSETUP.CFG
This file stores the Winsetup settings.

LISENCE.TXT
The lisence agreement.

BREAKDOWN.TXT
The file you're currently reading.

Now run winsetup to choose the settings you want the game to use, then
save and run Breakdown to start the game.

To uninstall simply delete the files listed above. If you wish to
remove your saved games and screenshots you can delete the "Breakdown
by OneDollar" folder and it's contents which is in
"My Documents\My Saved Games".

=============
3. GAME SETUP
=============

The Winsetup.exe program allows you to customise the graphic and sound
settings for the game. Double click Winsetup to launch the setup file.

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - RESOLUTION
This shows what screen resolution the game will run in, and can be
altered by the Graphics Filter setting. Some graphics cards and
monitors cannot display certain resolutions.

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - RUN IN A WINDOW INSTEAD OF FULL-SCREEN
Tick this box to run the game in windowed mode, or clear it to run in
full screen.

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - GRAPHICS DRIVER
Here you can choose between the DirectDraw 5 and Direct3D 9 drivers.
Try changing the driver if you have display problems.

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - GRAPHICS FILTER
This allows you to scale the game's graphics up. If the screen is too
small or big in windowed mode, or you receive errors relating to screen
resolutions you can try changing this setting. The options are...

None - No scaling, display in 320x240 resolution

2x, 3x, and 4x nearest-neighbour filter - display in double, triple or
quadruple size (640x480, 960x720, 1024x768) without smoothing the
pixels.

HQ2x Filter - display in double size (640x480) while applying a filter
to smooth out the pixels.

HQ3x Filter - display in triple size (960x720) while applying a filter
to smooth out the pixels

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - USE 85 HZ DISPLAY
Check this to use a refresh rate of 85 HZ. You probably won't need to
turn this setting on, so don't unless you know what you're doing!

GRAPHICS SETTINGS - SMOOTH SCALED SPRITES
Check this to turn on smooth sprite scaling. Breakout doesn't use any
scaled sprites, so leave it off.

SOUND OPTIONS - DIGITAL SOUND
Here you can choose from all available sound output devices, or disable
sound with the "No Digital Sound" option.

SOUND OPTIONS - MIDI MUSIC
Here you can choose from all available MIDI output devices. Breakout
doesn't have any MIDI music, so this setting will not affect anything.

LANGUAGE - GAME LANGUAGE
This lets you select from the game language packs. There is only the
"Game Default" (UK English) available.

ADVANCED OPTIONS - REPLAY - RUN REPLAY
This option has been disabled.

ADVANCED OPTIONS - ADVANCED - MAXIMUM SIZE
This allows you to change how much memory Breakout can use to store
sprites in. You may be able to speed up the game by increasing this,
but it will use up more computer resources. You are unlikely to need
to change this setting.

SAVE
Saves any changes you made and closes the setup program.

SAVE AND RUN
Saves and changes you made, closes the setup program and launches
Breakdown with the new settings.

CANCEL
Cancels any changes you made and closes the setup program.

4. GAME CONTROLS
================

Breakdown is controlled with a simple two button interface. The default
setting maps the left mouse button to "Use" and the right mouse button
to "Look", although the buttons can be swapped in the options menu.

The following controls assume the default mouse button setting...

WALK
Left click an empty area of the screen. The ensign will walk as close
to that area as he can.

USE
Left click an object. The ensign will walk to it and, if he can
interact with it, will do so. Sometimes using an object will show you a
close-up of that object. Click areas of the close-up to interact with
them, or click outside of the close-up to close it.

PICK UP
Left click an object. The ensign will walk to it and if it can be
picked up he will take it.

TALK
Left click on a character. The ensign will walk to them and attempt to
start a conversation.

LOOK
Right click on an object, character or inventory item. You will see a
message on screen giving you more information about it/them.

USE INVENTORY ON
The ensign's inventory is shown as a series of icons at the bottom of
the screen. Left click on one of these icons to take it out of the
inventory. Now left click on an object, character or another inventory
item to use the inventory on it, or right click to put the inventory
item back in the inventory.

SCAN OBJECT/CHARACTER
The Ensign comes equipped with an Employee Handbook. This can be used
on objects and characters to look them up in the Collection Of Worlds
database.
